When shopping for a car, most of the time we already have an idea of what we’re looking for. Size, color, number of doors and interior features are some of the most common factors in car buying. But do you also base your decision on safety ratings? In 2019, there were over 33,000 fatal auto accidents in the United States alone. That number includes only car accidents, not motorcycle or trucking accidents. The combined number is sobering.

While having a high safety-rated vehicle will not prevent  having a car accident, it does mean you and your passengers are more protected in the event of a crash. So shopping for a new vehicle should begin with a vehicle that ranks high in a safety to help minimize the damage or injury in auto accidents.

Larger cars typically provide more protection than smaller vehicles, but that’s not always 100% true. That’s why it’s important to look at ratings of not only smaller vehicles, but larger SUVs and passenger trucks too. In addition to size, braking and airbag systems can differ between manufacturers and vehicles. These things, along with many others, lead to official automobile safety ratings.
